Wallace, "Studies Scientific and Social" (London 1900) vol. , pp. 339-415, figs 52-58, comprising: 1.Translucent envelope printed "J. Horsburgh & Son | Studios & Galleries | 131 Princes Street | West End | Edinburgh" containing when listed five portrait photographs, two of Tahiti natives, two of Hawaii natives (2-5 below) and 1 of a native of Api, New Hebrides (see WP6/6/7); c. 1890? based on period of operation of photographers J Horsburgh and Sons. 2. Portrait photo of a young man with short hair decorated with leaves and flowers, in profile looking to the viewer's left, in front of a light coloured screen (paling fence? with rocks visible beneath). Seated in profile on a wooden chair, naked to the waist and wearing trousers. The image ends just below knee level. Sepia photographic print approximately 15 cm x 20 cm, with "Gov. Copyt. Native Man. Speculative date c. 1874? when the ship was in Tahiti. 3. Portrait photo of a young woman with shoulder-length hair decorated with leaves and flowers, in profile looking to the viewer's right, in front of a plain dark screen or blanket. She is seated on a wooden chair and is naked to the waist and wearing a long wrapped skirt. The image ends just below knee level. Sepia photographic print approximately 15 cm x 20 cm, with "Govt. Copyt. Native Girl. Tahiti. 403. J.H." printed or stamped in white along the bottom edge. This photograph, attributed to "Challenger" (the HMS "Challenger" scientific expedition, 1872-1876) by permission of the Stationery Office (HMSO) is reproduced in vol. 1, p. 407, fig. 53. Speculative date c. 1874? when the ship was in Tahiti. 4. Portrait photo of a middle-aged man with short hair and moustache, naked to the waist and wearing pale trousers or sarong with one hand visible in his lap, seated against a thatched wall. Seen in profile looking to the viewer's left. Image ends just below waist level. Sepia photographic print approximately 15 cm x 20 cm, with "Gov Copyt. Hawaii Man. 383. J H. " printed or stamped in white along the bottom edge.
