The hundred-fathom line includes the islands of Aru, Mysol, Waigiou, and Jobie, which have probably been, at no distant geological period, connected with New Guinea; while Ké, Ceram, c., are separated from it by deep sea, and on them no Paradiseæ exist. The island of Gilolo, on which the genus Semioptera occurs, extends towards Waigiou, and has the island of Guebe exactly between the two, suggesting the probability of a connexion

This bird agrees with my specimens from New Guinea; but the bill in those is black, with a red spot at the base only, near the nostrils; in this variety the bill seems all reddish, except a pale tip and dusky portion at the sides of the upper mandible. This is a curious example of interrupted distribution, the Moluccas intervening with their distinct species, P. amboinensis in Ceram, and P. hypophonius in Gilolo. I can, however

The Philippine Archipelago contains many active and extinct volcanoes, and has probably been reduced to its present fragmentary condition by subsidences attending on volcanic action. All along this great line of volcanoes are to be found more of less palpable signs of great upheaval and depression of land

Nomada is a genus of very rare occurrence within the tropics; one species was, however, found in Ceram, and one in Timor. This bird is sufficiently distinct from the Psittacus grandis, Gm., which is confined to the Gilolo group, in its smaller size, duller red colour, red under tail-coverts, and tail only orange-tipped, in place of the yellow under tail-coverts and larger yellow tail-band of E. grandis. Great confusion exists in the synonymy of the Psittaci, owing, I believe, to the fact of so many of these birds [page] 2
