The envelope is annotated (by A. R. Wallace?) in ink "letter with no place, or date, or name | one description of wonderful caverns - Old Hatch mentioned " and in pencil beneath "old" deleted: " Phoebe Hatch aet 15!". Contents: 1: letter on mourning paper, signed "X", from Derwent Villa, Sydenham Road North, (Cheltenham?) May, (no day or year date), to Mrs Sims (A. R. Wallace's sister Fanny), thanking her for her kind letter and likenesses of A. R. Wallace and aunt (Wilson?); describing the writer's step-daughter Mrs York and her children and reminiscing about childhood times at Dulwich. Annotated in pencil (by A. R. Wallace?) "?1872-74". 2: One folio folded headed "My description continued", apparently part of a letter, in blue ink in an unknown hand, describing (limestone?) caves with underground lakes visited by the writer and old Mr Hatch; mentioning Hatch's daughter Phoebe, Mr Sims and Mrs Cole. 3: Ms in black ink in an unknown hand, one folded folio headed "Robert Montgomery" on the right and "1842" on the other, with notes on the life and poetry of Robert Montgomery and, under "1842", the role of major poets including Wordsworth in procuring funding to build a church (near Cardiff Castle?). NHM-WP07.043    Printed:    [1873--1911]   Mss and print on ethical issues c. 1873-1911 in paper cover labelled in WGW's? A. R. Wallace's? hand "Letters on Ethical Questions", comprising: WP7/43.01 to 06. Notes: Cover made from blue paper blank on one side and red-lined on the other with printed divisions into two geographical regions (Australian and Indian) further divided into island groups (page of a collection register?). Two items assumed to be misfiled were removed and relocated: letter to Daily News re flying machines in war (see papers on this specific topic in WP ) and reprint The Palaearctic and Nearctic . . . Mammalia and Birds" (see WP7/72 ). It is possible some or all of the papers above are not those originally in the titled cover, which may have been created by WGW, as not all are letters, but all more or less fit the category.

William James Stillman, American journalist, artist, photographer and diplomat, married as his second wife the British Pre-Raphaelite artist Marie Spartali in 1871, the couple settling in Florence and dividing their time between England and Italy. He was the model for Merlin in the 1874 painting "The Beguiling of Merlin" by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. Stillman worked for the London Times as a young man and was interested in Spiritualism and in alleged manifestation of spirits during seances. Place: Frimley Green Surrey England Notes: Dates based on the apparent age of Stillman in the portrait and of his date of death. Photos of house and grounds were all folded inside a letter, WP1/8/130, letter from Williams to Mr Wallace (A. R. Wallace?), no date, when listed; the portrait was enclosed in a buff envelope marked in blue pencil on flap in A. R.
