R. Wallace's or WGW's? hand "Fred. Birch's latest letters (to Dec?1910.)" which contained the letters and postcards from Fred Birch to A. R. Wallace from Brazil, 1899 and 1910, when received at the NHM. Notes: Included because of the annotation but could probably be destroyed. PJL March 2003.

Wallace's letters from U.S.A. to his family 1886-1887" written in pencil in WGW's? hand on one side, and part of the first page of cyclostyled or carbon-copied notes apparently from a local council meeting concerning district council duties in relation to public rights of way and roadside verges, quoting a local Government act of 1894 . Place: England Notes: Notes may be from a Broadstone or Wimborne council meeting between 1901and 1907, when A. R. NHM-WP12.038    Note:    undated   "The Waste of Beauty | Written after reading "… Malay Archipelago", undated poem signed J W Gough, Ms in ink on 1 folded folio (3 pp) of lined paper, annotated in ink in A. R. Wallace's hand on the title page "Ideas and sentiments good - | verse but so-so | A.R.W." over "Not bad on the whole" in pencil in his? or WGW's? hand. Notes: A. R. Wallace's "Malay Archipelago" was first published in 1869 but frequently reprinted; the date of the poem could be anywhere between 1869 and A. R. Wallace's year of death, 1913.

R. Wallace's hand in ink "Probably equalled by J.S. Mill at same age." Notes: In a envelope addressed to Richard Wallace, postmarked 1996, labelled "Newspaper cuttings | Various" comprising press cuttings, corrected proofs, book reviews and other papers, when listed.

NHM-WP15.004.002    Correspondence:   Mitten William, Booker J  undated   Postcard; undated black and white /sepia photo showing a divided driveway and iron barred gate with a distant view of wooded fields; captioned in white "Cowdray. Hurstpierpoint | J. Booker Series"; possibly view from or of the grounds of Cowdray House, the country seat of Lord Cowdray; there is no writing on the reverse. Place: Hurstpierpoint West Sussex Notes: Placed in this series because of the address, presumably near the Mitten house; with a small collection of apparently unrelated photos and postcards of varying dates, (all old ref WP2/51) when listed.

NHM-WP17.005.023    Photo:    undated   Brown paper folder labelled in pencil in A. R. Wallace's? or his son William's? hand "Nature Portraits" and annotated in ink at right angles in an unknown hand "By Passenger Train | Carriage Paid". This folder enclosed the 22 portraits of scientists issued by "Nature" 18873-1884, WP17/5/1-22 Notes: Dirty and acidic. Put into a melinex sleeve to protect the top and bottom prints and placed in the acid-free envelope with them. END LIST WP/2/8

NHM-WP17.008.011    Photo:    undated   Buff envelope approximately 13 cm X 10 cm labelled in pencil, possibly in two different hands, "Geological & Glacial | Photos - | Ananda C. Swamy. | Aarschlucht." The words "Photos - Ananda C Swamy. | Aarschlucht." are almost certainly in A. R. Wallace's hand, "Geological & Glacial" may be in another hand (WGW's?) or added at a later date. When listed this envelope contained ten small undated photographic prints, nine showing geological features, probably glacial, and one apparently showing a devastated forest of tree stumps, possibly after a fire or tornado, though it may be a view of a petrified forest. Two may be of Aarschlucht (a narrow glacial gorge with a lake at the bottom in Aar, Switzerland) but are not labelled and do not show a lake. There is no photograph of or obviously by, Ananda Coomaraswamy. The prints have been listed separately as WP17/8/1-10

NHM-WP18.031    Note:    undated   Nine undated and unlabelled "Stone's Universal" brand document wallets with tape ties, in which some of the A. R. Wallace family papers were stored on arrival at the NHM and before listing. Pencilled notes and temporary reference numbers in square brackets on the wallets were added by P J Lucas during sorting and listing. The wallets appear old and may have been used by A. R. Wallace himself at some time, but there is no direct evidence that he did.
